Before Hugo Junkers developed the corrugated sheet metal construction method, airplanes were a compromise between weight and stability: they were usually built from a wooden frame covered with fabric. This construction method was lightweight, but it quickly reached its limits. While smooth metal sheets offered greater durability, they required extensive reinforcement and added weight.
In the early 1920s, his innovative design revolutionized aircraft construction: The characteristic corrugated sheet metal structure made airplanes lighter, more stable, and more durable. Today, this iconic design element adorns the dials of our watches, blending aviation history with modern design “Made in Germany.”
